Junior News
19th April, 2008
Saturday the 19th of April saw the running of the Toowoomba Jewellers King of the Ring Junior Challenge.
The track was very slippery for the first heat and a pile up in the first corner saw a few cars out due to damage. After a couple of restarts the promoters cancelled the race.
The track was much improved for the second heat and the eventual winner was Hayden Byrne with Tim Smith second and Jesse Volk third.
All the damaged cars made their way back for the third heat and it was the little orange Corolla of Ash Volk that found the fast way round to take the victory from Anteny Genrich and new driver comer Jacob Hall who finished third.
Hayden Byrne and Jacob Hall shared the front row of the grid for the 15 lap feature which went flag to flag without a stoppage. After a few laps Ash Volk found his way to the front with Hayden Byrne settling in for second. James Campbell who failed to finish either of the first two heats, battled his way through the field and up to third. Lapped traffic slowed Ash Volk's progress and the last two laps was an exciting race with the three cars of Volk, Byrne and Campbell now only a car length or so apart. Ash held on to take the win and it was a photo finish for second with Byrne beating Campbell by a matter of inches.
That's it for the Charlton Juniors for another season. Next season we will be including 6 cylinder cars so that should make it interesting. I have enjoyed my association with the juniors. Both Len Kennedy and I have found it has very satisfying to impart some of our knowledge to the junior drivers and watch them go on to become proficient young drivers. Jan Gorring will be looking after the juniors next season with a little help from Scott Genrich and Lee Volk. I wish you all the best and I look forward to watching you race again soon.
Peter Campbell.
